January has been unofficially dubbed “Divorce Month” due to the notable increase in marriage dissolutions that happen, or at least begin, at this time. For many couples, the divorce may not be executed until several months down the line; however, the notion to end the marriage at least starts around January.
Why the Increase?
According to respected psychologists in the field, some of the most common reasons for the spike in divorces during January and the first quarter of the year are as follows:
- Couples tend to stay together for the holidays. Divorces are tough, and they can be even tougher around the holidays. As Thanksgiving, Hanukah, Christmas, and New Year’s approach, people tend to back off the idea of divorce – at least temporarily. The rationale: better to get through the holidays as a family and then tackle the divorce at the start of the new year.
- There’s a psychological component to it. As Psychiatrist Mark Banschick points out, the start of a new year can create an existential-like crisis for couples who are unhappily married. The new year serves as a time to reflect on life, marriage, and the like. When a marriage is no longer working, this type of reflection could lead to the ultimate decision to divorce.
- Scarcity of court time. Courtroom personnel take time off during the holidays just like everyone else, making court time limited. When all is said and done, there are only about three weeks during the holiday season to make court appointments and hearings. Naturally, this makes it difficult to complete the divorce process around this time, and many cases get carried into the new year.
