Who Is Eligible to Apply for Naturalization?

USCIS requires that you meet a certain number of criteria to apply for U.S. citizenship. Assessing whether you meet all of them is the first step when you are considering naturalization. What Does the U.S. Citizenship Application Process Involve?

• Marriage certificate (when applying when married to a U.S. citizen)
• Residence and employment history for the required duration of permanent residency
• Two passport size photographs
• List of international travels during the required duration of permanent residency

After you provide your answers to those questions at the ceremony, a government official swears you in. You must surrender your I-551 card, also known as a green card, and you receive your naturalization certificate. U.S. citizenship does not expire, and you do not need to renew your documents.
